Record Number of Entries, Big Names and New Venues: What else the 14 Edition of the Kazan Film Festival Brings?

On 9 July, Tatar Inform Information Agency hosted a press conference dedicated to the upcoming 14th Kazan International Muslim Film Festival that will be held in the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan from 4 to 10 September 2018. Milyausha Aituganova, the director of Tatarkino and the executive director of the 14th Kazan Film Festival, shared the insights from the festival preparation process, including its programmes and juries, and announced the results of the entries submission campaign, answering the most current questions coming from the live broadcast of the press-conference.

As the largest international film festival in the region, Kazan Festival will bring together not only participants, but also special guests. Among the possible guests of the 14th edition is an actor of the popular Turkish TV series ‘The Magnificent Century’ (‘Muhteşem Yüzyıl’) and an American actor Danny Glover (TBC).

As regards the budget of the Kazan Film Festival, it was announced that it will reach the amount of 30 million roubles this year. ‘The festival funding is constituted by various grants. For instance, an almost 2 million roubles grant was allocated to the festival by Tatarkino. The festival is also generously supported by an annual presidential grant. Moreover, the festival is also funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan that allocated about 5 million roubles this year. The exact amount on budget could be provided by Tatarstan Ministry of Culture, as it might vary from year to year’, commented Milyausha Aituganova.

Previously, the shortlist of the 14th edition of the Kazan Film Festival was published on its web-site. It is necessary to note that a new record was set this year: the organising committee of the festival received 967 entries from 54 countries.

65films were shortlistedin competition, including 15 films produced in the Republic of Tatarstan that will be screened at the separate National Competition programme. The out-of-competition programme of the festival will be constituted around the following themes: Russia-Islamic World, Dialogue of Cultures, Cinema World of Childhood and Test Films.

The parallel programmes and side events of the festival announced at the press-conference include the days of cinema of Far East countries, several film premiers, the presentation of Khuzur TV channel and presentations by partner international film festivals.
