Shukhrat Makhmudov (Uzbekistan), a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR, presented his feature film Light from the East and short film Karakul within the framework of the special retrospective programme of the members of the jury of the 14th Kazan Muslim Film Festival.
Shuhrat Mahmudov came to the screenings with his wife Razika Mergenbaeva, who is a screenwriter of his films. The creative tandem presented their twoworks.
The first one was a short film Karakul (1997). The film was shot under the influence of Chechnya war. The second film, Light from the East, is dedicated to a great physician Avicenna (Ibn Sina). `I have watched the American series on the 100 greatest discoveries and to my surprise, I was not able to find anything about him, in particular, and Eastern scientists, in general. This fact allowed me to make the film more educational’, said the director.
A member of the jury of the festival, a director and people’s artists of Azerbaijan Oktay Mir-Kasim, who also attended the meeting, has highly appreciated the film: ‘`This film is a hymn to the greatness of human knowledge, inspiration and nobility. It reflects the significance of Islamic heritage. It is necessary to promote this film in such places, where these achievements are not known, underestimated or simply not appreciated’, said Oktay Mir-Kasim
In the end of the screening and meeting, Shukhrat Mahmudov received a traditional gift of the festival, Tatar slippers with ornaments, on behalf of the organising committee of the festival represented by Milyausha Aituganova. Razika Mergenbaeva was presented Tatar sweet Chak-Chak.
