Kazan Film Festival is expecting films from Cannes

During the first meeting of the Selection Committee of the XVIII KIMFF the priorities of the upcoming festival, accents and problems were discussed. The press service will open you the door to the underside of the festival.

The Selection Committee

The Selection Committee has undergone some changes. The executive director of Kazan International Muslim Film Festival Milyausha Aituganova introduced a new chairman of the Selection Committee. This is historian, cultural scientist, director of the New Institute of Cultural Studies, researcher of VGIK, doctoral candidate of the Laboratory of practice and technologies of intercultural dialogue modelling in the Russian Federation of Russian academy of national economy and state service under the President of Russia – Nina Kochelyaeva.

Also, among the Selection Committee members is Svetlana Slapke (Germany) – Doctor of Philosophy and Art History, film critic, author of articles and publications about culture and cinema of Central Asia and Turkey, CEO of “Eurasia Global Connecting” Agency.

There is also a new member of the Selection Committee – Timur Shaikhullin, Doctor of Philology, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Head of the department of Philology and Country Studies of Russian Islamic Institute.

 

THE MAIN TOPIC

Speaking about thematic priorities Milyausha Aituganova pointed out the main idea of the XVIII film forum. “This year Tatarstan celebrates the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria”. So, the main events of the festival will be devoted to this very occasion.

“The program of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by Volga Bulgaria should include films, that correspond the theme and problems. By the way there is a Turkish documentary about an Islamic school. “We should bring it to Kazan,” Nina Kochelyaeva said.

It is planned that opening film of the festival will be “Ibn Fadlan” which was made in Tatarstan.

PARALLEL PROGRAM

The Selection Committee members said the following: “There is a trend in 2022 – many films are about teenagers and family values”.

The parallel program “Ethnic cinema: the growth points” will include the best films from around the world, devoted to the traditions of different nations. Also, animated and feature films of VGIK are included in the non-competition program.

Svetlana Slapke suggested to maintain the “Turkic world” section.

She also commented on the participation of European films on the festival. “They will definitely decide after Cannes,” Svetlana Slapke said about the position of German colleagues “We are expecting two or three films from them”.

A plenty of films are submitted for the section “Russia – Islamic world”. By the way, a special award for the best film was established by Strategic vision group “Russia – Islamic world”.

According to the regulations, in early July a shortlist of the competition program will be announced, then the non-competition program will be compiled. All the information will be published on the official website of the festival http://kazan-mfmk.com/.
